A massive wildfire in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris has burned nearly 1,000 hectares, forcing 900 residents to evacuate. French interior minister says the fire is suspected to be arson.

A severe wildfire broke out on the night of July 12 in the historic Fontainebleau forest, approximately 60 km southeast of Paris. By July 13, the fire had scorched nearly 1,000 hectares, making it the largest forest fire on record in the Ile-de-France region.

About 900 residents were evacuated and the A6 highway was fully closed. The French government deployed nearly 500 firefighters and multiple water-bombing aircraft. President Macron warned of a wildfire of 'exceptional magnitude'.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the fire is suspected to be arson, noting approximately 10 ignition points found within a 1,000-meter radius. Prosecutors have opened an investigation.
