The southeast Oregon fire was ignited by lightning on July 23 and spread rapidly, reaching 282,000 acres in its first two days before growing more gradually and spreading across the state line.
Big Grass broke the record of a similar fire, the 2012 Long Draw Fire, that burned 557,028 acres of mostly grass, also in southeast Oregon. The fire has burned mostly grass and in a remote area near the Owyhee Canyonlands. It hasn't destroyed any homes but it has cost $40 million to manage and attempt to suppress. The fire was 36% contained as of Aug. 12.
The Grasshopper Fire burning near Mount Hood remained extremely active on Aug. 11 and grew to 83,642 acres. Six primary residences and 15 outbuildings have been lost in the Grasshopper Fire.
